The NewEnglander staff recognizes and values the role the press plays as checks and balances for the government. Barring reporters from the Oval Office is unconstitutional and a great disservice to Americans.
Journalists serve as the “fourth estate”, a civic role that allows journalists to serve as a watchdog and keep the government accountable. This role is protected by the First Amendment, which states: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
Any decision to prohibit specific news outlets from the White House without due process is a strict violation of the U.S. Constitution.
On September 18, President Donald Trump announced via Truth Social that a ban would be applied to CNN, MS NOW, and Politico as a result of their “constant ‘reporting’ of FAKE NEWS!”.
Last week, a judge ruled that this ban was “likely unconstitutional”, and the outlets were allowed back in. This is not the first time President Trump has banned specific outlets from the White House. In February of 2025, the Associated Press along with other news outlets were barred from entering the Oval Office.
Under the Trump Administration, the Department of Defense has significantly restricted journalists’ access within the Pentagon.
At the New Englander, we support the First Amendment and recognize the role of journalists in a democracy.
