Democratic State Representative Jared Sullivan joined politics students and professors in the Torrington Arms West Pub Wednesday, Oct. 29, to share pizza discuss why he’s running for US Senate. Sullivan said he launched his campaign because he’s frustrated with the current delegation amid immigration arrests.

“I just think if you can’t stand up for a constitutionally protected right like due process, you know, we’re all innocent until proven guilty, then I just don’t know what you’re doing in office if you’re not going to speak up”, Sullivan said.

Sullivan has had a long career in economics which led him to pay attention to politics throughout his career, and he also was elected as a State Representative twice.

“I’ve always been paying attention to politics, but I haven’t really been like eyeing a political seat ever, until really 2021,” he said.

Sullivan said he encourages citizens to take action and wants politicians who will fight for the people.

“I want people in this moment who are going to rise to that challenge, to stand up to that fight. It’s not simply being good at moving policy through or changing policy, it’s about actually figuring out ways to push back against an authoritarian regime,” Sullivan said about the current White House administration.

“It’s really important now to rise up and pay attention to what’s going on, because our Constitution is being tested every day. And without our Constitution, whatever the issue is that you might care about, whether it’s affordability of housing or health care or the rights of marginalized communities, none of that’s going to matter if we lose our Constitution.”
