New England College has 22 student clubs and more coming all the time. One club that came to NEC in November of 2025 is the Gardening Club. NEC’s greenhouse behind the Science Building has been neglected for years and the members of the Gardening Club plan to change that.
“I saw that the greenhouse hadn’t been used for about four years I think it was out of commission and it’s a super nice greenhouse, so I thought why not use it and utilize the space that the campus gives us,” said club leader Nicole Bahder.
The greenhouse has a few broken windows and needs work before it can be used for growing. Right now, the focus is on fundraising for the future.
“During this time all we can really do is fundraise for getting more things to go in the greenhouse and everything,” Bahder said.
Once club members can properly grow things, they don’t plan on just growing flowers.
“Eventually when the snow is off the ground and everything and we’re back in the greenhouse we’re growing a few food items right now so hopefully we can give those to charitable organizations,” Bahder said.
While the club eventually plans to hold meetings and events in the greenhouse, the lack of heat is driving meetings indoors to the 4th floor of the Simon Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:30 pm.
The gardening club currently has around ten members and once they have access to a fully fixed greenhouse, they are hoping to have around twenty students in their club.
