The Henniker Historical Society is offering a $500 reward for any information leading to the return of a missing headstone commemorating one of the oldest houses in Henniker.
The workers at the historical society posted the reward after getting an anonymous call from someone noticing that the large piece of granite was missing. The headstone honors the homestead of Robert Wallace, also known as the “Ocean Born Mary House.” It is known as the most photographed house in Henniker and the headstone was in the front of the home along with many other headstones placed around the town that mark other historical properties.
One of the volunteers at the historical society, Sue Fetzer, said that they received a couple of leads that were passed on to the local police.
“Officer Bannister of the Henniker Police Department was kind enough to take a report and he has been working with the homeowner where the marker sits in front of, but the homeowner says that she doesn’t know when the marker was gone and she did not know of it- so we decided to put out a missing poster,” Fetzer said.
Police added that there has not been much follow-up information on the leads they have received.
