Former New England College business professor John Lyons hosted a lecture on Feb. 13 to help inspire the NEC Business Club with stories about his own experience running a business.

Lyons went into a deep dive about his tree nursery that he runs in Newbury, NH, which he founded in 1979. The nursery focuses on unique conifers and selected broadleaf flowering evergreens.

“I learned how to run the nursery by doing it, and I taught my children the same way,” Lyons said.

Lyons said he decided to be a professor in addition to working at the nursery because he enjoyed it.

“I decided to teach because I loved doing it, I always loved helping younger students; it was never just about the money,” he said.

Although Lyons is not a professor at NEC anymore, he said loves to come back when he can to share his experience about how he started his business and he loves to help students get a better understanding on how business works.

Lyons has a building named after him on the New England College campus that was built only a few years back.

“It is an enormous honor to have his name on the building and I want to thank all of the faculty as well,” Lyons said.

Lastly, Lyons wanted to share a message to NEC students.

“I do have a message, and I want to say that you have capabilities beyond what you imagine, so get involved with doing,” he said.
