Best Red Sox Team Ever, 2018

The 2018 Boston Red Sox are being considered the best Red Sox team ever for many reasons.

Most players date back to the 2016 team when they turned around their previous struggles. After winning the 2013 World Series, the Red Sox tanked the following two years, coming in 5th place in the AL East two seasons in a row. Between 2014 and 2015 the Red Sox lost a combined 175 games.

The 2016 season can definitely be considered a comeback season. After signing left handed pitcher David Price, and closer Craig Kimbrel, the Red Sox went on and finished 93-69 and won the AL East for the first time since 2013. Unfortunately, they would be swept by the Cleveland Indians in the Division Series. A season with so much potential was washed away with a sweep.

In 2017 the Red Sox came back and had an identical season to the year before. Boston finished 93-69 and won the AL East for the second year in a row. They would advance to the playoffs again but this time around it would be against the dangerous Houston Astros who had won 101 games during the regular season. Boston would go on to lose the series 3-1, due to an offensive explosion by the Astros. The Astros would power their way to a World Series Championship.

The Red Sox had the talent to win a World Series but no one was sure if they had it in them. After Houston advanced to the World Series the Red Sox and Alex Cora agreed to a 3-year deal through 2021. Then during the offseason, they bulked up the bullpen and signed power slugger J.D. Martinez in free agency to a 5-year contract that was worth 110 million.

There was more focus on Giancarlo Stanton signing with the Yankees. MLB teams did not know what was coming. The Red Sox entered 2018 with one goal in mind and that was to get back to the postseason and win the World Series.

The Red Sox played their best baseball all the through 2018. They went 22-9 in spring training, which was the best record. During the regular season the Red Sox won 108 games, the first of three teams this season to win 100 games.

When they got to the playoffs fans were a little skeptical of what the outcome was going to be because of the previous two first round exits. They faced off against their arch rival the New York Yankees, who also had eclipsed 100 wins on the season, in the divisional series. It was the first time since the 2004 ALCS that the Sox and the Yankees were facing off. Many believed that the Yankees line-up would take over because of their power.

The Red Sox would go on to beat the Yankees 3-1 in the series and advance to the ALCS against the Houston Astros, who they had unfinished business with from last year’s playoffs. The Red Sox dropped the first game of that series but they recovered and came back to win in five games.

After they beat the Astros, it meant that the Red Sox had beaten two 100 plus win teams to get to the World Series.

The rest is history: the Red Sox beat the Dodgers in five games to win the Series to cap off their amazing season.
