Book Review: Big Little Lies

With fall approaching, my favorite cozy pastime is curling up on the couch, grabbing my favorite fluffy blanket and reading. The colder weather always reminds me that I can grab a book, and it will take me wherever I want to go. Laine Moriarty’s novel Big Little Lies captures readers with its brilliantly heartfelt story and page turning mystery.

The story takes place in Pirriwee Peninsula, Australia. It follows the lives of several seemingly perfect, responsible, suburban mothers: Madeline, Jane and Celeste. Jane is new to town and doesn’t know what to expect from these rich and beautiful people around her.

Madeline, a quick, witty and unforgiving woman, befriends Jane and introduces her to Celeste, her stunningly beautiful and smart friend. Although Jane could not be any more different than them, she is a young, single mother that is running away from something that happened in her past.

The annual trivia night fundraiser at Pirriwee Elementary is just around the corner, and this year’s theme is Audrey Hepburn and Elvis Presley. Who doesn’t love a good occasion to dress up? But the days leading up to this event will change the way you will look at these women and their families.

This story is about parents behaving badly and the lives that those actions can affect. This story is about the real lives of children, teens, family, friends, wives, husbands, and exes. This is also a story about domestic violence and abuse.

Anyone can look perfect on the outside, but you have no idea what happens behind closed doors. The lies we tell ourselves and others, sometimes to disguise the bigger lies, can blow up into utter chaos and maybe even murder.

Sometimes lies can be more lethal than you could have ever imagined.

Based on the book, Big Little Lies is also a hit HBO series starring Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, and Shailene Woodley.
