NEC’s theatre department will bring a a new style of shows to the Putnam Center this semester. Instead of doing the traditional style of a single long form production the group will be doing 11 short styles of plays that last about 10 minutes each. Two of the plays will consist of musicals; this is the first time in NEC theatre history that the team will produce a musical.

“Whats really exciting about this one is that we are doing two short musicals and it is the first time we have done musical theaters as far as I know in a really long time,” NEC theatre director, Colleen Harris, said.

Doing shorter styles of production also will take stress off the students who are participating in the production this semester, Harris said. It helps give them time to focus on classes and other majors, and it gives them more opportunity to be more involved in different ways for the shows. Students have the ability to act in the production but they can also direct a show or help with the design and costumes, which is not possible when during a typical production.

The plays also opened positions to faculty and students who have never been involved in theater were also very encouraged to join.

“I really enjoy theater and when Colleen [Harris] mentioned that this particular season would be open to faculty and staff I thought I would try,” said NEC professor Bill Cass, who is participating as an actor.

The productions will take place in the NEC’s Putnam Center for Performing Arts on April 15th & 16th at 7:30pm and on April 18th at 2:00pm.
