NEC’s Field Hockey team took the win Saturday in a tense back and forth game against Lasell University. The ‘Grims defeated the visiting team in double-overtime in the first round of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tournament.
“It was a great hard-fought battle between both teams,” said Noel Huliselan, a student at NEC.
The first two periods saw tough defense from both teams, resulting in a scoreless first half.
It wasn’t until later in the third period that NEC senior forward Meaghan McCamish scored the first point. The ‘Grims held the lead for the rest of the 3rd quarter. Lasell went on to tie the game in the latter half of the 4th period, leading to overtime.

The first overtime went a lot like the first two periods with NEC and Lasell going back and forth and coming close to scoring a handful of times, but neither was able to score leading to a tense double-overtime.
With 5:41 remaining on the clock, NEC midfielder Drea Chin scored the sudden-victory game-winning goal.
Kylee Henriquez, a forward, said the team had been “putting in all the hard work throughout the season,” which resulted in the tough win.
Head Coach Carly Sweeney echoed a similar statement about keeping the momentum going further into the playoffs.
“I know that we just have to continue to do what we’ve been doing all season and that’s working hard and rising together as a team and just continue to grow,” Sweeney said. She gave credit to the entire team on their victory and said everyone did their job.

Sweeney said she is excited to move on in the playoffs, calling this a redemption tour from last year when the team was in the semifinals.
The ‘Grims host Simmons University at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday.
