The NEC field hockey team came from behind to win their first home conference game Wednesday against the Rivier University Raiders.
In the first half, the ‘Grims were down 0-2, despite putting on a lot of pressure in their offensive zone.
The ‘Grims started to come back in the third quarter and goals scored by Martina Hill and Kaylyn Trubiano tied the game 2-2.
Captain Kate Bourgeois said the team felt the pressure after the Raiders took the lead in the first half.
“The thing that changed for us was honestly more motivation to win once we saw we were down. We came out a bit slow moving and not to our fullest potential in the first, and I think the reality of maybe losing a game really pushed us to come together and play our game. The first goal we scored was what we needed to get the energy up and it kept going from there,” Bourgeois said.
With less than 5 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Drea Chin scored a big goal for the ‘Grims.
“This win definitely shows we aren’t out of the game until it’s completely over. Once a goal is scored on us it really isn’t the end and we can come back from it. It also builds confidence for a lot of players because it’s a wide range of people who have been scoring this year and can help everyone realize that they can all contribute to the team,” Bourgeois said.
“Our biggest rooms for improvement are probably recovering defense and attacking the ball sooner. Our entire back defense line is all people who haven’t played together yet, so figuring out how everyone plays together has been a work in progress!”
