New England College had its first ever ‘Grims Talent Show in the Putnam Theater on Friday, March 21. This talent show consisted of many acts including lots of singing and one act of comedy. This event was put on by theater major Shania Castro.
“I thought a talent show would be fun, because the basic definition for theater is A performs B for C, so as long as you’re preforming anything in front of an audience, it’s theater. So, this is a theater event,” Castro said.

This event is the first talent show welcomed to all ‘Grims; in the past, they had something similar, but not the same.
“They used to have a Mr. NEC talent competition, but I think they stopped doing that my freshman year. So, they used to have events like this, but we’re bringing it back as something for all genders and not just the men on campus,” Castro said.

This event was judged by three judges, Colleen McElveen from the Communication Studies department, Colleen Harris from the Theater department, and Erica Sigauke from the Diversity and Inclusion Program. At the end of the performances, the judges got together outside to decide who the three winners would be.
There was a prize given out for third, second, and first place. Third place won a gift card to Abby’s Café, second place won a $25 Amazon gift card, and first place won a $50 Amazon gift card.

The person who came in first place is a singer named Grace Giesler who sang the song Set Fire to The Rain by Adele.
“I’ve been singing since I was around six, and I used to do talent shows in middle school, and then I kind of stopped. But I’ve always loved singing, and just performing, so it was nice to get back on stage and sing again,” Giesler said.

Performing in front of an audience can be scary to a lot of people, and all these ‘Grims had to concur that fear.
“I was extremely nervous. Especially going last, it was really nervewracking hearing everyone else and then waiting to do my part. I was really nervous,” Giesler said.
