Use of AI for on-campus advertising draws controversy

NEC students and faculty have noticed an increasing amount of AI-generated posters being used for on campus advertisements, but the practice is being met with mixed reviews.

Wren Anhalt is a senior here on campus who is frustrated with the use of A.I. to advertise on campus events because she said students could be doing the work to gain experience.

“It does a disservice to the art students here, this is quite literally a liberal arts school,” she said.

The Institute of Art and Design offers classes such as 2D and 3D Art, Graphic Design, Game Design, and Photography. NEC also offers art majors and minors. Yoav Horesh, a professor of IAD, teaches many photography classes on campus. He said AI is becoming a tool not to help, but instead for easiness.

“It’s used as a shortcut. It’s not used for research, it’s not used for making things better. It’s making things easier,” he said.

Professor Horesh warns that students who may be using AI for the ease may end up struggling more in the long run.

“If they’re not going to have a phone, they will be completely incapable. They wouldn’t be able to design, they wouldn’t be able to make software, they wouldn’t be able to write four sentences that are coherent. And because some people use it as a shortcut, eventually they are left with no ability to do much,” he said.
